How to Assemble an Office Chair the Easy Way

Your long-awaited new office chair just arrived, and we know you must be excited. But before you can sit down, get comfortable, and get to work, you need to figure out how to put it all together.

This may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. With these four simple steps, you'll be sitting in a chair in no time.

Before starting to assemble the office chair

When you buy an office chair, it should come with a small kit with everything you need. However, these tools are often of poor quality, so we recommend keeping them handy to make your life a little easier. We recommend that you carry these tools with you:

• screwdriver

• hexagonal wrench

• Rubber / mallet

Wearing protective gloves is a good idea, but not necessary if you plan to work without them.

Here's how you can easily assemble your office chair

open your office chair

The first step is to get everything out of the box and all the protective packaging. Open the box and remove everything, but be sure to keep the small parts in a safe place.

Find the instruction manual and check that all required parts are in the box. If something is missing, you should contact the manufacturer for a replacement part as soon as possible.

Remove any plastic or bubble wrap around these parts. While this can be a somewhat tedious process, getting it out of the way early when assembling the chair will save you some frustration.

Getting these out early can save you some frustration when assembling the chair.

Assemble the star base

Flip the star base over so the five spikes are in the air. Most chairs come with five, but no matter how many you have, the process is the same. Insert the casters (removable wheels) into the slots.

No tools are required for this step. The casters should click into place when you swivel them to the star base floor. However, if you can't get them in, tap them lightly with a hammer.

Flip the base over so the wheels are on the ground and insert the gas spring into the top center of the star base. The larger end of the gas spring (usually black) goes in first. Most cylinders are held in place by the weight of the seat, but some have a small pin you can insert underneath.

Assemble the seat

Flip the saddle over so you can see the bottom. Take the chair mechanism and align it with the hole in the bottom of the seat. It should be obvious how the mechanism fits into the seat. If this is not the case, please check the user manual.

Insert the screws into the holes and finger-tighten them as far as possible. Use a wrench to tighten the screws as far as possible. Sometimes there is a plastic cover that can be placed over the mechanism. If your chair comes with one, you can now snap it into place.

The armrests and backrest should now rest on the seat. These are screwed in and should be easy to do. Start by inserting the handrail with two or four blocks, depending on the size of the handrail. The back should only need two screws to hold it in place.

put everything together

This is the easiest part of the process, just lift the assembled seat and place it on top of the cylinder and press down with your body weight. That's all!

Tips to Remember

• Do not apply force to screws or bolts. If they are not connected, detach them and try again.

• Do not throw away your owner's manual. Not every chair fits together the same way, you may need it to get some guidance on assembling a specific chair.

bottom line

Don't be intimidated by the chair in this brand new box when you assemble the chair in a few easy steps. Assembling an office chair is easier than most people think. Luckily, most have similar parts, so once you're done with your future chair it'll be a breeze.
